Composition of the Storting (sto_sammensetning)

The table shows the size of the Storting over the years, distributed among parties. All content is derived from the table sto_representant. The purpose of the table is to simplify the extraction of the distribution of seats between the parties in the Storting.

The variables are as follows:

Period (period)

The Storting's consecutive numbering of parliamentary periods, where the number is set equal to the number of the period's first session. Corresponding annual figures can be found in the table i_stortingsperioder. Example: Period number 166 indicates the period 2021-2025.

Party (parti)

Continuous code indicating which political party the representative belongs to. The codes are given in the table i_parti. If the party affiliation changes during the period, we get a new entry in the table. We make a strict distinction between party and election lists so that, for example, the representatives from the Socialist Election Association are listed under their respective parties before the majority of them were gathered in the Socialist Left Party. Example: 31 is Venstre.

An exception is made for period 32, 1883-1885, when the first parties were founded. The representatives were elected non-partisan, but eventually divided into parties, and the variable shows this distribution for this period.

Seats (seter)

Number of representatives of the Storting per party during the period, to the extent that party affiliation is known.

Total seats (seter_totalt)

Number of representatives in the Storting during the period. Here we also count any representatives with unknown party affiliation.
