DATA ON THE POLITICAL SYSTEM

Parties (i_parti)

An overview as complete as possible of Norwegian political parties and their development. The parties do not have to be registered political parties (cf. Pilsens Samlingsparti). Sami parties at the Sami Parliament elections are included.

The table applies to parties, not election lists. Joint lists are thus omitted. We therefore do not include, for example, the Sosialistisk Valgforbund, but rather count the parties that participated: Democratic Socialists (AIK), the Norwegian Communist Party and the Socialist Left Party.

Serial number (kode)

Continuous internal identifier. Is mandatory and unique together with fra_år and til_år. Example: Árja is 453.

Name (navn)

The party name. For registered parties, the name under which the party is registered is usually used, otherwise the dominant party name. If a party changes its name without notifying the Enhetsregisteret, we respect the name change here, even if the party continues to be registered under the old name, which also remains protected. Mandatory.

Last date of protection (vernet_til)

Limit for how long the party name is protected, four years after dissolution. Existing parties with a protected party name have no end date for the protection, which is then set to 09/09/9999. If the name is not protected, the variable is NULL.

First year (fra_år)

Last year (til_år)

Specifies the time period for which this entry applies. Is in practice mandatory and unique together with code. Note, however, that when changing names, from_year for the new name will be equal to_year for the old one. In SQL code, the expression BETWEEN from_year AND to_year-1 is recommended to find data about the party in a given election year. For example, the Norwegian Labor Party changed its name to the Labor Party on 9 April 2011, which was before the municipal and county council elections of the same year. Thus, ‘Norwegian Labor Party’ gets to_year 2011 while ‘Labor Party’ gets from_year 2011. If the search year is 2011, the expression BETWEEN from_year AND to_year will match both parts. Therefore, BETWEEN from_year AND to_year-1 is correct.

Unknown fra_år is set to 0, and persistent til_år to 9999.

First date (fra_dato)

Indicates the date from which this entry is valid. Unknown date is set to NULL. For example, if we have not yet identified the founding date of 'Det Norske Arbeiderparti', set from_date to NULL. 'Arbeiderpartiet'' has from_date 09/04/2011.

Last date (til_dato)

Indicates the date to which this entry is valid. Unknown date is set to NULL; persistent date to 09/09/9999. Date of change is not included. Det Norske Arbeiderparti, which changed its name on 9 April 2011, has until_date 08/04/2011.

Short form of name (kortnavn)

Short form by which the party is known. May be an official abbreviation, but not necessarily. Example: R for Red Party (Rødt).

Name Bokmål (navn_bm)

Name Nynorsk (navn_nn)

Name Northern Sámi (navn_se)

Name English (navn_en)

Alternative language forms for the name, according to ISO 639-1: Bokmål, Nynorsk, Northern Sámi and English, respectively. Is NULL if the language form is not registered for this party.

Predecessor (forgjenger[])

Code for one or more parties that form the direct predecessor of this, possibly NULL. In the event of a name change, the predecessor[1] is assigned to the same party. When incorporating, predecessor[1] is set to the same party while predecessor[2] is set to the party being incorporated.

Successor (etterfølger[])

Code for any subsequent parties, otherwise NULL. In the event of a name change, the successor[1] is assigned to the same party. In case of separation, successor[1] is set to the same lot and successor[2] to the separated.

Website (nettside)

The website of the party on the internet.
